McKinney (17-10-1)( 9-4) hosted Sherman in a must win game to stay in the hunt for second place after the loss against Centennial on Saturday. After handing Sherman a run to start the game McKinney answered with two of their own in the first. Alyssa Fontillas started it off with a single followed by an Ashley Thomas single. Jenny Gilbert stepped up to the plate and lined a shot down right field ending up on third scoring both Fontillas and Thomas. McKInney kept the game interesting with a hit here and there for the next six innings being kept off balance by the Sherman pitcher. But in the bottom of the seventh with the score tied 2-2 it was very fitting that on senior night senior Jenny Guzman steps up to lead off and took a 1-1 pitch and sent over the ball over left centerfield for a walk off home run. McKinney ends the regular season Friday night at Frisco Liberty.

McKinney (15-9-1)( 7-3) traveled over to Frisco Friday night looking to get the second half win and stay in the race for second place overall. McKinney (11-8-1)( 3-2) hosted Frisco Centennial Tuesday on Teacher Appreciation night. With runners at first and second Ashley Thomas hit a triple down the left field line scoring both Guajardo and Guzman. Thomas was plated by a Jenny Gilbert sac fly. McKinney (10-8-1 Overall, 2-2 District) traveled to their cross town rival North Thursday for an afternoon game. The Lionettes didn’t display the same type of game they had in the previous two games, ending today’s game with a total of 8 errors in the field. McKinney failed to make an adjustment at the plate as well, striking out six times along the way.  In three separate occasions within the first three innings McKinney had runners in scoring position with less than two outs but came away empty. McKinney was able to score in the fourth, getting two runs off one hit giving life to the Lionettes but that’s as close as McKinney would come.

The Lionettes run ruled Frisco in 5 innings, scoring 12 runs with 13 hits, giving up 2 runs on a no-hit effort by Jennifer Gilbert.  Although there weren’t any home runs there were plenty of other great hits and runs to end the game in five innings. McKinney again scored in each of its at bats started by Ashley Thomas reaching on a single. Thomas then went on to steal second and reached third when the catcher miss handled the ball. Thomas was finally brought home by a Meredith Baker single. The next inning got started after Lisa Licata, who on Monday received Honorable Mention Player of the Week by the Dallas Morning News, doubled off the left centerfield wall. Licata then scored when Gina Guajardo singled to right center. McKinney’s four run fourth came when the bases were loaded started by a Fontillas lead off bunt followed by Gilbert and Pruitt singles. Three of the runs were plated from a bases clearing hit up left center gap by Licata. Licata sitting on third base scored when Guajardo singled up the middle. In the second game McKinney (4-3) needed a win against 4A Elgin (#7 team in the state) to stay alive for one more game and a chance to play for the consolation championship of the tournament. McKinney struggled most of the game against the Elgin pitcher and looked as if they were coming home earlier than had been expected. MHS came close in the fourth inning having had a runner in scoring position but was unable to get her across the plate. But in the sixth with Thomas on second and two outs Jenny Gilbert hit a home run over right center which was enough as Gilbert shut Elgin down in the top of the seventh to secure the victory and one more game..

Everything appeared to be going the Lionettes way as MHS had the game within victories grasp with a 4-0 lead going into the bottom of the fourth. That lead soon slipped away as Lockhart was able to take advantage of a pitching change and scored seven unanswered runs. The loss put McKinney into the consolation portion of the Gold bracket. On a side note Lockhart ended up playing against New Braunfals Canyon (#1 4A team in the state) in the overall championship game.

In the third game of pool play at the Round Rock tournament McKinney (3-2) needed to have a good game to come away with a clean sweep in pool play and get into the gold bracket. As in the first two games MHS came out scoring first but against a scrappy team like Round Rock and a pitching change the Lionettes inability to adjust in the third game of the day were unable to score any more runs. Round Rock however stayed consistent at the plate and was able to manufacture a run in each of the three innings. McKinney awaits its fate today as pool play ends and bracket play begins Saturday.
